YouTube's built-in controls aren't enough

80% of children watch YouTube. The platform's own tools leave real gaps — and parents are left to fill them.

46% have encountered inappropriate content on the platform

YouTube Restricted Mode

Over-blocks legitimate educational content while missing harmful channels entirely. A blunt on/off switch with no category control.

YouTube Kids (ages 3-12 only)

Too limited for ages 8-14. Teens won't use it, and content is too restricted for older children who need access to educational material.

Paid parental control apps

$40-100/year, require app installation, and often don't work with browser-based YouTube viewing on shared computers.

Algorithm rabbit holes

Autoplay and recommendations push children toward increasingly extreme content — even after they start from something harmless.

Three protection modes for every age

Choose the right level of protection based on your child's age and what they need access to.

Whitelist-Only

Whitelist-Only Mode

Maximum protection. Only channels you explicitly approve are visible — everything else is hidden. Best for young children on shared computers.

  • All unknown channels hidden by default
  • You approve each channel manually
  • Can be combined with Kids Profile
  • Quick toggle to add exceptions
Standard + Categories

Standard + Categories

Full access with specific categories blocked. Best for teens who need YouTube for school but you want guardrails in place.

  • 14 categories to choose from
  • Per-category on/off toggle
  • Block only what you're concerned about
  • Personal whitelist for exceptions

What parents get

Tools built for real family use, not just checkbox parental controls.

PIN Protection

Lock Blokari's settings with a 4-6 digit PIN. Your child cannot change the filtering rules without it. Set up the PIN yourself during installation.

Click-to-Reveal (Green Mode)

In Green mode, borderline content is blurred with a badge instead of hidden. Your child must click to reveal it. Teaches media literacy without hard blocking.

No Account Required

Parental controls work without creating an account. Install the extension, choose your settings, set a PIN — done. No email, no sign-up.

Multi-Platform Protection

Blokari filters YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and Reddit. As your children grow, the same extension protects them across all platforms teens use.

Frequently asked questions

Everything parents want to know before installing.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

Parental controls are free forever in Blokari — no subscription, no credit card, no catch. The full channel database, Kids Profile, PIN protection, and all 14 filtering categories are available on the free plan. Paid plans ($3/mo Pro, $8/mo Business) add features like daily sync and multi-browser support, but everything you need to protect your child at home is free.

What ages is this for?

Blokari works for ages 3 to 17. For young children (3-10), use Kids Profile with Whitelist-Only mode. For tweens (10-13), Kids Profile with category filtering is the right balance. For teens (13-17), Standard mode with selected categories like violence, gambling, and adult content provides appropriate filtering while keeping access to educational content.

Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?

No. Blokari is a browser extension and works only in desktop browsers — Chrome, Edge, and Brave on Windows, Mac, or Linux. On mobile, YouTube runs as a native app and browser extensions cannot interact with it. For mobile devices, use YouTube Kids (separate app) or YouTube's built-in Restricted Mode. Blokari provides the strongest protection for desktop/laptop use, including shared family computers.

Can my child disable it?

With PIN protection enabled, your child cannot change Blokari's settings without the PIN. A technically savvy older child could still disable the extension from Chrome's extension settings (chrome://extensions). For younger children this is not a practical concern. For older teens, Blokari works best alongside an open conversation about responsible internet use. You can also use your operating system's parental controls to restrict access to browser settings.

Will it block educational content my child needs for school?

Blokari blocks by channel, not by keyword or topic. Educational channels are not in the blocked categories. If a specific channel is incorrectly blocked, you can add it to your whitelist in Blokari's settings — whitelisted channels are always visible regardless of category settings. You can search for any channel by name and manually allow it in seconds.

Does it track my child? Is any data collected?

No. Blokari works offline-first — all filtering runs locally in the browser. The extension does not collect, store, or transmit your child's browsing history, watch history, or any personal data. The curated channel lists are downloaded from Blokari's servers once and stored locally, but your child's activity is never shared with anyone. You can verify this in the extension's open-source code.
